Stacey Herries is an encaustic artist from Bozeman, Montana. 

Creative influences have surrounded her since birth: coming from a long line of artists, her maternal grandfather was a naval photographer, while both her mother and brother are printmakers. “I have been surrounded by constructing, problem-solving, and creating my entire life,” she notes—a foundational background that led her through study and careers in graphic design, two-dimensional art, and teaching high school (2003-2021). 

Although she enjoys exploring various mediums,  she has focused primarily on encaustic painting for the past 17 years.

As a lover of color inspired by the surrounding landscape, Stacey utilizes a combination of both transparent and opaque waxes, and oil paints to convey her perspective on organic beauty. She strives to create a luminescent sense of depth and richness in her paintings by building up multiple layers and carving markings into the wax, producing the distinct atmospheric quality of the natural environments that capture her eye.

Her sense of place and deep familial roots in Montana strongly influence her art whether the imagery is current or dusted off from childhood memory. While her work is composed of representational images of Montana landscapes, it also incorporates unrefined organic elements not commonly seen by the naked eye. 

Amplifying biologically inspired repetitions and allowing them to reside alongside familiar natural scenes serves as a reminder of the importance of individual parts to the whole—inviting viewers to experience her work as an unselfconscious depiction of nature composed of unexpected and appealing elements.
